Lá cẩm rửa sạch, đem nấu với 800 ml nước lọc, nghiền cho ra ra màu. Hoa hồi giã nát, cho vào túi lọc.
Nếp vo sạch, đem ngâm với 700 ml nước lá cẩm, túi lọc hoa hồi trong khoảng 2-3 giờ (có thể thêm nước lọc cho ngập nếp). Sau đó, vớt ra để ráo nước.
Tiếp theo, nấu nồi nước sôi, cho nếp vào xửng, tạo vài lỗ trên nếp để lấy hơi nước từ dưới lên. Đun khoảng 15-20 phút cho nếp chín ráo, không bỡ.
Xới xôi ra chảo, thêm nước cốt dừa, đường trắng và 3 muỗng canh nước lá cẩm, đảo đều trên lửa vừa cho xôi ra nhựa, dẻo đều. Nếu thích mùi thơm thì cho thêm 1/2 muỗng cà phê bột hồi (bột tai vị) vào.
Trải tấm màng bọc thực phẩm, thoa ít dầu, rắc ít mè rang rồi cho xôi vào, ém chặc. Rắc thêm lớp mè lên trên mặt xôi, ém cho mè dính vào xôi.
